Workspace browser in Databricks SQL
The workspace browser allows you to create folders and organize Databricks objects within them. Clicking Workspace in the left sidebar opens the workspace browser for a given persona. Within the workspace browser for the SQL persona, you create SQL objects and folders, browse and share assets across personas, and assign permissions at the folder level to organize assets by team or project.
Viewing objects in the workspace browser
The workspace browser allows you to browse your Databricks assets in a single place, across multiple personas.
Notebooks, experiments, libraries, and folders created within the Data Science & Engineering and Databricks Machine Learning personas are visible in the SQL persona in the Databricks SQL workspace browser.
In addition to existing and new workspace content created in the Data Science & Engineering and Databricks Machine Learning personas, you can add Databricks SQL content (queries, dashboards, and alerts) into the workspace browser from within the Databricks SQL persona. These objects can then be organized into folders within the workspace browser.
Queries, dashboards, and alerts created in the Databricks SQL persona are visible in the Data Science & Engineering and Databricks Machine Learning personas through their respective workspace browsers.
Viewing new queries, dashboards, and alerts
Newly saved queries, dashboards, and alerts can now be viewed in the workspace browser by clicking 
Workspace in the sidebar in any persona. These queries are viewable, by default, in the Home folder. Users can organize queries into folders in the workspace browser along with other Databricks objects. Newly saved queries, dashboards, and alerts are visible in the workspace browser regardless of their method of creation.
Note
Regardless of their method of creation, all queries, dashboards, and alerts can also be viewed in their respective list pages by clicking the appropriate icon in the sidebar.
Opening existing objects
In general, opening an object in the workspace browser will take you to the relevant persona for that particular object.
Queries, dashboards, and alerts open the query in the SQL persona, regardless of the persona from which they were opened.
Notebooks open in the persona from which it was opened.
Experiments open the experiment in the Databricks Machine Learning persona.
Libraries opened from the workspace browser in the SQL persona open in the Data Science & Engineering persona, unless the Databricks Machine Learning persona was pinned in the persona switcher.
Libraries opened from the workspace browser in the Data Science & Engineering or Databricks Machine Learning personas open in the persona from which it was opened.
Working with folders and folder objects
The workspace enables you to easily create new folders, move objects between folders, and share objects to groups of users with a choice of permission levels.
To create a new folder, click Create and then select Folder.
To move objects between folders, simply select the object you wish to move and then drag and drop into the desired destination folder.
To share and grant permissions to all objects in a folder, right-click the folder, select Share, and enter the users, groups or service principals to which you want to share the folder and its objects, and then select the permission level. Click Add.
Migrating existing queries, dashboards, and alerts
Currently saved queries, dashboards, and alerts are not visible in the Databricks SQL workspace browser until they are explicitly migrated into the Databricks SQL workspace browser. To view and organize currently existing queries, users (or admins) must migrate them into the workspace browser. You can use one of the following two methods to migrate existing queries, dashboards, and alerts.
Use the query, dashboard, and alert list pages to migrate objects you own. To view objects that you can migrate on list page, click My queries, My dashboards, or My alerts on the appropriate list page and then click Migrate. Admins can change ownership of an object to themselves if they would like to perform the migration.
Open the query, dashboard, and alert object itself and then click the
next to the object. In the displayed list, select Migrate to Workspace.
With either method, after you click Migrate, you have the option to select an existing folder into which to migrate the object or you can simply migrate it to the Home folder. In addition to the permissions that are already on the object, the migrated object inherits any permission on the folder into which it’s being organized. Additionally, moving an object to a folder where another object with the same name already exists will automatically update the newly moved object’s name with the suffix “ (1)”.
